SMART ENERGY PROJECT

Smart Energy GB is the not-for profit government backed campaign helping everyone in Britain understand the importance of smart meters and their benefits to people and our environment.

Smart meters
Smart meters are replacing traditional gas meters as part of an essential infrastructure upgrade and will help to deliver on our long-term target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. They also bring a number of consumer benefits, many particularly relevant to customers in vulnerable circumstances.

1) Accurate bills:
Data provided by smart meters allows energy suppliers to create bills based on actual usage rather than estimates.

2) Automatic meter readings:
Meter readings are sent directly to the supplier via a secure network meaning consumers don’t need to read their meter – particularly helpful for customers with limited mobility.

3) Prepay:
With smart prepay meters, customers can track and top up their credit remotely via phone or app meaning they don’t have to go to the shop at inconvenient times. Smart meter in-home displays also make it easier to see when credit is running low.

4) Control & visibility:
Smart meters come with an In-home display (IHD) giving customers visibility of their energy use. Consumers can see in near real-time their energy usage allowing them to make informed decisions and small changes.

5) Saving & budgeting benefits:
When you’re on a tight budget it can be a struggle to make ends meet. Even when you’re doing everything you can to save money. A smart meter could make things a bit easier.

6) For renters:
Many people on a low-income live in rented accommodation and may believe they aren’t able to get a smart meter. We want to dispel this myth. If your gas and electricity bills are addressed to you and you pay them, you can ask your energy supplier for a smart meter. You don’t need your landlord’s permission, but you should let them know. If you don’t pay your energy bills, ask your landlord to get one installed for you.

With a smart meter on your team, you can take control of your energy bills by using the in-home display to track your usage.

It must be noted that:

1) Smart meters can help you save energy, but it’s not automatic. Many people find the in-home display useful. It gives you more information about your energy use. This can help you work out how to save energy and money around the home.

2) Some homes can’t get a smart meter yet but will be able to get one before the end of the rollout. Your energy supplier can tell you if you can have one. They can also tell you how soon you can get one installed.
